How to Read a Supplement Label Without Getting Confused

Supplement labels contain everything you need to make a smart purchasing decision - but only if you know what each section means. The Supplement Facts panel, serving size, % Daily Value, and proprietary blend disclosures all follow specific FDA formatting rules, and once you understand the structure, you can evaluate any bottle in under two minutes.
Start With the Serving Size - Before Anything Else
The serving size is printed at the top of the Supplement Facts panel and controls every other number on the label. If a protein powder lists 25 grams of protein per serving but the serving size is two scoops, you're getting 12.5 grams per scoop. Manufacturers are legally allowed to set their own serving sizes, so this is the first place misleading math hides.
Check two things immediately:
- Servings per container: A bottle listing 60 servings at 2 capsules per serving holds 120 capsules total. If the bottle only contains 90 capsules, something is wrong.
- How realistic the serving size is: A serving listed as "3 capsules" that most people take as 1 means all the dosage numbers are effectively one-third of what's advertised.
Decode the % Daily Value Column
The % Daily Value (% DV) column shows how much of your recommended daily intake one serving provides, based on a 2,000-calorie reference diet established by the FDA. A few critical facts about this column:
- Not every ingredient has an established Daily Value. When it doesn't, the label will show a dagger symbol (†) instead of a percentage.
- A % DV over 100% isn't automatically dangerous - many B-vitamin supplements run 500–2,000% DV because B vitamins are water-soluble and excess is excreted. Fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, K) are a different story - those accumulate in tissue.
- The dagger footnote at the bottom of the panel that reads "† Daily Value not established" is not a red flag. It simply means the FDA hasn't set a reference intake for that compound yet.
Understand the "Other Ingredients" Section
Below the Supplement Facts panel sits the "Other Ingredients" list. These are fillers, binders, capsule shells, anti-caking agents, and preservatives. This section matters for three groups of people:

A proprietary blend is a mixture of ingredients listed under a single name (like "Neuro Support Matrix" or "Thermogenic Complex") with only the total combined weight disclosed - not the individual ingredient amounts. This is legal under current FDA rules, and it's where many supplement companies hide underdosed ingredients.
Here's how to spot a proprietary blend and evaluate it:
- Ingredients inside a proprietary blend are still listed in descending order by weight, even if the amounts aren't given. Whatever is listed first is the most abundant.
- If the total blend weight is 500 mg and the blend contains seven ingredients, at least some of them are present in clinically irrelevant doses (often called "fairy dusting").
- Compare the listed ingredients against published clinical research. Citrulline malate, for example, requires 6–8 grams per dose to show performance benefits. If it appears in a 1,200 mg proprietary blend alongside five other compounds, the dose is insufficient.
Third-Party Testing Seals: What They Actually Mean
The FDA does not approve supplements before they go to market. Structure/Function Claims vs. Disease Claims
Every statement on a supplement label falls into one of two FDA-regulated categories. Knowing the difference protects you from overblown marketing.
Structure/function claims describe how a nutrient affects normal body structure or function. These are allowed on supplement labels and don't require FDA approval - but the manufacturer must notify the FDA within 30 days of marketing. Examples: "supports immune health," "helps maintain healthy bones," "promotes mental clarity."
Disease claims state that a product diagnoses, cures, mitigates, treats, or prevents a disease. These are illegal on supplement labels. Any product saying it "cures arthritis" or "treats depression" is making an unlawful drug claim. The required disclaimer you'll see under legal structure/function claims reads: "This statement has not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration.
